During your holiday in Lesvos do not miss to visit the Holy Temple of Pammegiston Taxiarchis Mantamados. An imposing temple with the miraculous icon of the Archangel to stand out. Browse through the village and discover the high-quality local products and their way of production.

One of the most important ecclesiastical monuments on the island of Lesvos is the temple of Taxiarchis Mantamados. Taxiarchis is the patron saint and the  guardian angel of the island. According to the tradition at the end of the 9th century, Lesvos, being a rich island, with developed trade and wealthy families with imposing mansions that are saved until today, was often the target of pirates who sought money and spoils. In such a raid by the Saracens in the village and the monastery, the Archangel appeared and saved one of the monks, who was the sole survivor of the attack. He took soil, which had been watered with the blood of the monks, and wax and made the form of " Taxiarchis ", as he had come to face him. The embossed icon that adorns the interior of the Temple is one of the few that exist throughout Orthodoxy. Taxiarchis is known for many miracles, while the church celebrates the Sunday of the “Myrrh”, two weeks after the Greek Easter, gathering a multitude of believers from all over the world. The feast that takes place in the temple's courtyard is magnificent with many local customs taking place on the two-day celebration. A typical custom that you will notice is that many believers go on foot to Taxiarchis from various towns and villages of Lesvos.
The monastery is open daily from sunrise to sunset, while church functions are held every Sunday, Monday and on holidays. If you wish to stay in the monastery there is this possibility, it is advisable to first contact them in order to check availability. One of the most usual gifts you can offer is iron shoes, as the tradition wants Archangel to wear them during night hours.
At the same time, Mantamados is a very beautiful village with highly developed local produce. There are cooperatives that make honey, jams, sweets that are worth trying, while Mantamados is also known for its cheese-making where one can find pure local cheese. In addition, there are a few workshops for making clay utensils, where you can watch the creations live by the craftsmen.
